I'm literally on the verge of tears as I'm typing this.
NOT out of sadness, but rather shock and....I don't even know. "Joy" can't even come close to it.
This might be somewhat long. But like I said, I'm literally in shock and need to tell you guys what happened. PLEASE READ THIS OFMFMFLDJFfdsafdsakfdjlsaj u w u
So...there's this nationwide art competition called the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. It's only open from grades 7 - 12, I'm sure some of you have heard about it before.
It's one of the most prestigious and well-known art competitions in the world.
You can enter a piece of artwork, and it can win either an Honorable Mention, a Silver Key, a Gold Key, or nothing at all.
Up until now, I had only gotten an honorable mention--pretty bad luck.
This year, this piece won a Gold Key at Regionals (the local judging):

In case you haven't heard, bombs went off near the finish line of the world-famous Boston Marathon, killing and injuring participants and watchers. (so far I've heard 2 confirmed deaths, 22 injured)
i swear to god you can't step outside your own house anymore without being at risk for some sort of sick attack by a psychopath or terrorist.
ugh prayers and condolences for the victims and their families. I hope whoever planted those bombs gets caught, punished, and pushed off a cliff.

It's not even a deal at all.

Let's face it, folks: people have been lying about their age since the beginning of time.

Young men would lie about their age to get into the military.
People under 21 make fake ID's to get into bars and nightclubs.
And people under the age of 13 will click "Yes, I am 13 years of age or older".

Can each of these things be harmful? Yes, in a sense.

But why everyone is suddenly freaking out about kids under 13 being on deviantART is beyond me.

That whole COPPA business?
They're not gonna do shit unless mass multitudes of children are putting themselves into serious danger.
Even then, laws like this don't catch every single case.

deviantART is NOT going to get shut down because some kids are lying about their age.

There is no way to prove they are even underage unless they are blatantly going around saying "HERP DERP GUYS I'M ONLY 9!!!!!!!!!!1111"

I mean, think about it. deviantART is a fairly small site compared to Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. These sites all require one to be age 13 or older as well. I cannot even count the number of underage people I've seen on these sites. Heck, I guarantee at least 1,000 of my YouTube subscribers are ages 11 and under.

Do you really think COPPA is going to shut down these sites because of these kids? Haha, NOPE.
So why is deviantART any different?

I am not concerned whatsoever about the sake of deviantART over some kids making accounts for the purpose of posting and sharing their own artwork.

This one girl was calling me a bitch for stating my opinion so I blocked her.
If she's reading this, sorry you can't comment, hun. xD

One of my best friends got banned for being underaged and I guess it's ok because of the law, but things got out of hand when people started to insult her about being "inmature" and young for this site and blah blah blah and I was like DUDE! YOU'RE THE ONE WHO IS INMATURE IN HERE!
that was the thing that really pissed me off :/ just because your older doesn't mean you have the right to insult younger kids

i totally agree with this. i really don't see why people are freaking out about underaged kids? i've seen people freak out over 12 year olds who were just about to turn 13 and they banned them. really, i don't see the sense in that. i was 11 when i joined DeviantArt xD (i'm 13 now so now they can't do anything about that >:3) i agree with that one person that said they should make a DeviantArt for kids. or the kids under the age of 13 could get parents permission, and the kids would have a filter that wouldn't let them view any mature content. i've seen a couple of websites that you had to get your parents permission to join if you were under 13.

And you're right--that's what Neopets does! All you need is a parent's signature, and they let you access all parts of the site. That would be a great idea for dA.}
